Sparking a Conversation, Parent’s Quick Tip

Easy to talk about the kids but DON’T.

Here are a few easy ways to spark a conversation with your loved one while avoiding speaking about the kids. Remember the earth will keep rotating if you don’t talk about the kids. Remember that after so many days, weeks, months or even years of not talking about each other, many things may have changed. So ask questions about each other, what you both want out of life and so on. The idea is to give each other person an opportunity to talk about yourselves and connect with one another. Sounds simple but when most of your day is overwhelmed by kids, work and chores, this becomes more difficult. But put in the effort. Talk as if you were just getting to know each other.

Still need help? These are quick ways to get things going:

  1. Ask “What are your dreams and aspirations?”
  2. Tell me about your day.
  3. What is one thing your parents don’t know about you?
  4. Who is your favorite actor/actress?
  5. What is your favorite movie?

Try leaving a list of conversation starters next to your bed. Before either of you has an opportunity to get distracted, look at the list and start that conversation.
